Complete vs. Partial Dentures

As their names suggest, complete dentures replace teeth in patients who no longer have any. Partial dentures, on the other hand, are removable dental appliances that replace multiple missing teeth. These appliances can be attached to existing teeth with clasps, crowns, or bridges and will fill in the spaces created by missing teeth to complete your smile. Both complete and partial dentures consist of a metal base with durable plastic teeth and gums. They will both improve a person’s ability to chew and provide support to your lips and cheeks.

It is essential to replace missing teeth not only to maintain a healthy smile but also to prevent your remaining teeth from drifting into the empty spaces. Teeth that move out of position can damage tissue in your mouth, impede your speech, increase your risk of tooth decay and gum disease, and amplify your risk of further tooth loss.

Implant-Supported Dentures

A dental implant is a titanium post that is surgically implanted in the jawbone in order to replace a tooth’s roots. Some patients opt to support their dentures with implants. This approach to dentures requires at least two procedures with a few months of healing in between. The benefit to implant-supported dentures, however, is a lifetime of reliable support from your dentures. You will not have to worry about your dentures slipping when you speak or eat.

If you choose to go with implant-supported dentures, you will undergo an initial procedure in which an incision is made in the gums and a pilot hole is drilled into the bone. The threaded implant is then placed and the gum is stitched closed over the top of it. We will then wait for the implant to fuse with the bone, which usually takes three to six months, before then conducting the second procedure.

During this second procedure, another incision is made in the gums, and an abutment is placed on top of the implant. This abutment serves as the point of contact for your dentures. We will then take an impression of your mouth and new dental implants to fabricate your dentures, which typically takes about two weeks. Once your dentures are ready, we will attach them to your implants, and your new smile will be complete.
