What is a Dental Implant?
A dental implant is a replacement tooth root made of a small, titanium post that is surgically anchored into the jaw. The post is then attached to an artificial replacement tooth, or crown. Dental implants are necessary when a patient loses a tooth or has an unhealthy existing tooth. For a permanent solution to keeping a crown in place, a dental implant is the way to go.
Dental implants are stronger and more resilient than dentures or bridges and provide patients with a permanent solution to tooth loss. If you are missing more than one tooth, dental implants can be used to support a dental bridge or as a companion to dentures in order to increase stability and reduce gum irritation. This preparation may include creating a small hole in the jaw for the titanium screw that holds the implant in place. Once Dr. Lee has created the initial hole, he will slowly widen it for placement of the implant screw. After it has been placed, a protective cover screw will be placed for the site to heal and the implant to anchor. Typically, a temporary abutment and crown are placed on the implant.
