What is a Dental Implant?

A dental implant is a replacement tooth root made of a small titanium post that is surgically anchored into the jaw bone. The post is then attached to an artificial replacement tooth, or a crown. Dental implants become necessary when a patient loses a tooth or if a patient has an unhealthy existing tooth. If you’re looking for a permanent solution to keeping a crown in place, a dental implant is the way to go.

Dental implants are stronger and more resilient than dentures or bridges and therefore provide patients with a permanent solution to tooth loss. If you are missing more than one tooth, dental implants can be used to support a dental bridge or as a companion to dentures in order to increase stability and reduce gum irritation. In short, whether you use dental implants alone or in conjunction with dentures or a bridge, they will make it easier for you to eat, speak, and smile with confidence.

Premier Dental advises people who lose a tooth to take action to replace it. If you lose a tooth and do not do anything about it, you can cause damage to the adjacent teeth. Gum recession and bone loss can cause your other teeth to wear prematurely. You may also have trouble eating and speaking, not to mention potential teeth shifting, jaw aches, and headaches.

Benefits of a Dental Implant

Getting a dental implant, on the other hand, prevents bone loss in the jaw by giving the bone purpose and providing it with something to hold on to. If a significant amount of time has passed since you lost the tooth or teeth, you may have lost too much bone in the jaw for a standard dental implant. In that case, grafting may be necessary in order to increase bone mass before we perform the implant procedure.

Before your dental implant procedure, Dr. Lee will prepare your jaw for implantation. This preparation includes creating a small hole in the jawbone for the titanium screw that will hold the dental implant in place. Once Dr. Lee has created the initial hole, he will slowly widen the hole to allow for placement of the implant screw. After it has been placed, a protective cover screw will be placed on to allow the implant site to heal and the implant to anchor. Typically a temporary abutment and a temporary crown are placed on the implant.

An entire implant procedure normally takes just over an hour and can typically be done using only a local anesthetic. If you are in need of a dental implant, contact Premier Dental today to (865) 483-1323 make an appointment with Dr. Lee.
